PAST ALL AROUND CHAMPIONS STILL STRONG

Shane Iker | by Stephen Mowbray Shane Kenny | www.dephotos.com.au Mark Knox | www.kenyonsportsphotos.com.au THREE past all around champions in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association will be strong chances in timed events at the August 8-10 Mt Isa Rodeo. Emerald cowboy Shane Kenny has won 14 all around titles in the APRA. Alton Downs rider Shane Iker won his second all around title in May this year. Ebenezer rider Mark Knox will lead the south Queensland challenge in the rope and tie and team roping and has one all around title to his credit. Kenny is in outstanding form after winning the rope and tie at Richmond and Cloncurry rodeos in the past fortnight. He joined with Clermont rider Brendan Kenny to be placed in team roping at Cloncurry after a third place at Richmond. I am as confident as anyone else, you never know who is going to win at Mt Isa, Shane said. In 1991, Des Gulbransen won the steer wrestling at Mt Isa and he was a saddle bronc ride. At the end of the day, a bit of luck can go a long way. Shane is the early season leader in APRA all around standings from Iker. Knox won his title competing in only two events and is back on the circuit after mainly staying at home in the past 18 months so his wife Tamara could chase a rodeo dream. Now both are competing on the Northern Run with Mark going for more roping and all around titles and Tamara aiming for her first title at a National Finals Rodeo. Emerald rider Campbell Hodson works in Shanes rodeo contracting business Destiny Cattle Company so is learning a few roping tricks from the best in the business. Campbell was second in the roping at Cloncurry and won the team roping so will be one to watch in timed events, Shane said. Cloncurry winners: Saddle bronc John McNamee (Millmerran) Bull ride Troy Mara (Glendon) Bareback bronc ride Jamie Howlett (Roma) Rope and tie Shane Kenny (Emerald) Steer wrestling Mark Gibb (Charters Towers) Team roping Campbell Hodson (Emerald) and Liam Davison (Charters Towers) Barrel racing Bianca Hertel (Coonamble) Breakaway roping Stacey Wilburn (Upper Horton) Rodeo Program: August 8-10 Mt Isa; August 16 Katherine (NT); August 23 Darwin (NT); August 30 Mataranka (NT).
