SQLD BIG WINNERS AT MT ISA

SOUTH QUEENSLAND riders Jane Fay and Michael Maher each scored convincing wins in the annual Mt Isa Rodeo.
Fay hails from Warra on the Western Downs and won the breakaway roping from Victorian star Anna McPhee.
She qualified seventh for the National Finals Rodeo (NFR) in May, three places in front of McPhee, but is set to finish much higher this year after success at Mt Isa.
Positions for the finals are determined by prize money and winning the richest rodeo in the land has propelled Fay into the top three.
Maher scored 81 in round 1 and 84 in round 2 to win both rounds and the aggregate in saddle bronc at Mt Isa.
The Warwick cowboy was competing in his first Mt Isa Rodeo for three years and didn’t miss the opportunity to secure qualification for the NFR for a second time.
In 2011, he split first in the aggregate and narrowly missed winning his first title at the NFR at the Gold Coast.
Roma rider Jamie Howlett led the bareback bronc ride standings going into the Northern Run and showed he is still in red hot form with a second at Mt Isa.
Wandoan cowgirl Rachel Little was second in the barrel race.
One of the stars at Mt Isa was Jesse Townsend from Calvert in the Moreton area who was third in steer wrestling and team roping.
Proserpine rider Roy Dunn won the bull ride after being the only cowboy to record a score on two bulls at the weekend. Tolga cowboy Cody Teece was second with 84, the highest among the cowboys who mastered one bull. Sam Champ (Merdale) and Ryan Storey (Dingo) split third.
After four rodeos in Queensland on successive weekends, APRA Northern Run action heads to the Northern Territory for three rodeos starting this weekend.
There is a short break in early September before action hots up at Tamworth, Marrabel and Narrabri in the run up to one of the top two rodeos on the APRA circuit, Warwick, on October 23-26.
Mt Isa and Warwick rodeos have the most prize money and attract the most riders. It is expected there will be more than 600 nominations for Warwick, the only four-day rodeo on the circuit other than the NFR.
