ACTION in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association moves to Tasmania with rodeos at Carrick, Ulverstone and Harveydale this month.
One of the form riders is Stowport star Luke Hamilton who won the steer roping at Tumbarumba, Victoria, on New Year’s Day.
Hamilton was timed at 10.2 seconds to win by more than half a second from Hughenden (Qld) rider Clancy Middleton and two Victorians, Lee Kimber and Terry Evison.
The first of the three rodeos will be at Carrick on Saturday when 15 events are on the program at Quercus Park on Oaks Rd for a rodeo starting at 6pm.
There are all three rough stock events in open and second-division ranks, bareback, saddle bronc and the bull ride as well as a full program of timed events.
Mick Wyllie, Luke Hamilton and Brian Fish are the contractors this weekend and at the Ulverstone Rodeo at Batten Park on January 17 from 7pm.
The final rodeo in January in Tasmania will be on January 26 with an 11am start at the arena at Westbury on the Harveydale-Biralee Rd. Wyllie and Hamilton are the contractors for the Australia Day Rodeo.
Tasmanian star Denny Leary is 16th in bull ride standings going into Carrick and needs to move up one place before April 30 to qualify for the National Finals Rodeo.
There are 16 nominations for the ladies barrel race at Carrick. Michelle Harvey is one of the form riders in Tasmania and is currently ninth in rookie all around cowgirl standings.
Some well-credentialed interstate riders will compete in the three Tasmanian rodeos.
TASMANIA PROGRAM: January 10 Carrick, January 17 Ulverstone, January 26 Harveydale.
