THE odds are the Kenny and Iker families will feature prominently in rodeo this year after a golden start to 2016.
The two Australian Professional Rodeo Association events at Lazy Acres, Alton Downs, attracted plenty of interest on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.
Kenny and Iker are two of the big names in rodeo and between the two families, they recorded 13 placings at the two rodeos.
APRA current titleholder and standings leader Shane Kenny, of Emerald, increased his lead in rope and tie with wins each day in the two rodeos at Alton Downs. He also had a fourth in steer wrestling.
It was the same in the Iker family with Jorja, of Alton Downs, winning the breakaway roping each day with times of 2.25 seconds and 2.0 seconds, top performances in a sport where the record is 1.75 seconds.
Shane Kenny’s brother Kacey Kenny won the steer wrestling on New Year’s Day at Alton Downs and had one third in team roping.
Jorja’s husband Shane Iker had fourths in steer wrestling and the rope and tie. Shane’s son Jordan Iker combined with Kobe Miller of Warwick, to win the junior team roping in the New Year’s Eve Rodeo at Alton Downs. Jordan had a second on day 2 in the same event
Ellysa Kenny recorded a second and third in junior breakaway roping on top of the three placings of her father Shane Kenny.
The rodeo at Alton Downs was the last in Queensland before the Millmerran Rodeo on February 27.
The Comet Benefit Rodeo will be held on March 19 and then two rodeos at both Roma and Emerald on the March 25-28 Easter weekend. Competitors will need to finish in the top-15 in the standings by the end of April to qualify for this year’s Australian Championships.
The saddle bronc ride will be worth seeing at Millmerran on February 27 as hometown heroes Peter Moffatt and John McNamee both won money for placings on the Christmas Run in the southern states.
PROGRAM: January 16 Yarra Valley (Vic); January 26 Harveydale (Tas); January 30 Ulverstone (Tas), Wilmington (SA), Wagga Wagga (NSW); February 6 Peterborough (SA); XXXX Gold Xtreme Bulls at Penrith (NSW); February 13 Ballarat (Vic), Ross (Tas).
