TWO QLD RIDERS WIN ALL AROUND TITLES

QUEENSLAND riders Campbell Hodson and Ellysa Kenny have won the all around titles in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.

The titles were decided after four rounds at the Warwick Rodeo APRA National Finals which finished on Sunday.
Both attribute thirds in round 4 of the national finals on Sunday to helping secure their spots as the best all around riders in pro rodeo.
Hodson hails from Townsville and won the all around cowboy title for a third successive year.
“It is unbelievable to win again,” he said.
“A third in steer wrestling on Sunday was enough to get me across the line in the all around.”
He competed with a different horse in each event, Red, Henry and Blackie.
“The competition was much tougher this year, I was lucky enough to back up my wins in the past two years,” Hodson said.
He capped an outstanding national finals with a title win in the rope and tie.
Hodson puts a lot of his success down to the coaching of Shane Kenny while he was based in Emerald.
In 2015 and 2016, he competed in jackpot rodeos in Texas in the United States but has no thoughts of heading overseas to compete again.
Emerald rider Ellysa Kenny said her all around cowgirl win this year was as good if not better than her first all around win in 2017.
“The competition in the cowgirl events was a lot tougher this year. My third in the barrel race on Sunday helped me win the all around,” she said.
She rode the same horses this year which helped her win her first national title in 2017.
Nine-year-old Ted was her barrel racing horse and she competed on Jellybean, 17, in the breakaway roping.
“I was extremely nervous on Sunday before the last round,” Ellysa said.
“I came into the national finals with the lead in the all around.”
In December, Ellysa will head to the United States to Rope For The Crown at Las Vegas.
“This will be my first trip overseas to compete,” she said.
“My aim in the APRA will be to make it three all around cowgirl wins next year.”
Experienced New South Wales rider Cody Angland has set points records in the APRA but his saddle bronc title win on Sunday was his first at the national finals.
Merrijig (Vic) cowboy Will Purcell and finals aggregate winner Troy Wilkinson (Upper Horton, N SW) were the only riders to ride time on three of their four bulls.
Purcell has won a national title in Canada and now has an Australian pro rodeo bull ride title to his credit.
Two of the most successful riders in APRA history, Shane Kenny (team roping header) and Cherie O’Donoghue (breakaway roping) each won another title.
