THE Turvey cousins from St George are both in the top-15 in saddle bronc standings in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association and are set to qualify for next year’s National Finals Rodeo.
Andrew Turvey has been a regular in the top-15 and has often been accompanied to rodeos by his brother David.
David is having this season off and it is Andrew and his cousin John who are near the top of the standings.
Both were placed at the Cloncurry Rodeo in early August, Andrew was second and John equal fourth to boost their spots in the standings.
John moved up to fourth in the standings after a fourth in the final and fifth in the aggregate at Mt Isa.
Andrew is now eighth in the saddle bronc standings after a fourth in the first round at Warwick on the last weekend in October.
Placings at Mt Isa and Warwick, the richest two rodeos in the APRA season, can make a season as prize money secured determines placings in the standings.
While Warwick cowboy Michael Maher has a clear lead in the battle for the saddle bronc pro tour buckle for most money won in the season, Carl Green (Walcha), Jason Crawford (Biloela) and John Turvey (St George) are in the next three spots on the standings and a realistic chance to win the pro tour.
Crawford won at Bundaberg in late November with Maher fourth.
The rodeo program in Queensland has concluded for the year but many competitors will be on the road to Victoria, South Australia and New South Wales for the seven Christmas Run rodeos which will start at Myrtleford in Victoria on Boxing Day.
The next APRA Rodeo in Queensland will be the Millmerran Show Rodeo on February 28.
