WANDOAN rider David Worsfold won a bareback bronc riding national title on Drought Breaker last month and is one of the likely starters in the Christmas Run in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association starting Boxing Day at Myrtleford.
THE rain has come across much of South Queensland which could boost the number of competitors who head south for the Christmas Run of seven rodeos in four states.
Worsfold works in rural industry and there was a little irony to the fact he won the last round and the title at the Warwick Rodeo Australian Championships on the horse Drought Breaker.
Since he won on Drought Breaker, more rain has fallen across the area.
Last year, Worsfold had outstanding success on the Christmas Run after also competing successfully down the years in North America.
The Christmas Run will be a great chance for riders to built up points in the APRA season which started on May 1 and goes to April 30 next year.
The top-15 to April 30 will qualify for the Australian championships.
Warwick pair Michael Maher and Mark Collins are on top of the saddle bronc current standings after finishing in the same order in the 2015 season.
Millmerran cowboy John McNamee is third on the standings followed by Mitchell cowboy Greg Hamilton.
McNamee is one rider with plenty of success on the Southern States.
The one Queensland rodeo during the holiday period is the Alton Downs Double Dip on December 31-January 1.
Many of the riders from the northern half of the nation will have a short break now with the only rodeos at Rosewood (NSW) on December 5 in the run-up to Myrtleford.
APRA Program: December 5 – Rosewood (NSW); December 26 – Myrtleford (Vic) Golden Spurs Rodeo; December 27 – Carrieton (SA); December 31-January 1 – Alton Downs (Qld) Double Dip; January 1 – Tumbarumba (NSW) 71st Rodeo; January 2 – Yarrawonga (Vic); January 8 – Finley (NSW); January 9 – Beechworth (Vic), Carrick (Tas) Bull Ride and Rodeo Spectacular.
