LONGREACH rider Sally Malay has won both bull rides at the Rosewood Rodeo in New South Wales and will start the Christmas Run at Myrtleford as one of the favourites.
Malay was an outstanding junior in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association and has wasted no time making his mark in the senior ranks.
Originally from Western Australia, Malay moved to Yarrawonga in Victoria and is now working in the Longreach area in Queensland.
He was the only rider in both the open and second-division bull rides to make time at Rosewood.
Malay is one of almost 200 nominations for the first of the seven Christmas Run rodeos, the Boxing Day Rodeo at Myrtleford in Victoria.
He is part of an outstanding field in the open bull ride, including Atherton rider Kurt Shepherd, former world rookie all around champion Brad Pierce and Northern Territory star Darcy McBean.
Taroom cowboy Stuart McGuire-Spalding will head the chances from the Sunshine State in the rope and tie at Myrtleford.
In the saddle bronc, current APRA saddle bronc titleholder Brad Pierce from Tooma, New South Wales, will be the favourite but is expected to face tough opposition from Millmerran (Qld) star John McNamee who is third in APRA standings.
The second rodeo early on the Christmas Run is at Carrieton in South Australia on December 27 where there are more than 200 nominations.
Some of the best cowboys in Queensland will compete in the Alton Downs Double Dip on December 31-January 1 before heading south for the first five rodeos on the Christmas Run.
PROGRAM: December 26 – Myrtleford Golden Spurs Rodeo (Vic); December 27 – Carrieton (SA); December 31-January 1 – Alton Downs Double Dip (Qld); January 1 – Tumbarumba 71st Rodeo (NSW); January 2 – Yarrawonga (Vic); January 8 – Finley (NSW); January 9 – Beechworth (Vic) and Carrick Bull Ride and Rodeo Spectacular (Tas).
