EMERALD rider Shane Kenny and Clermont cowboy Brendan Kenny have set a new Australian Professional Rodeo Association record in team roping.
The Central Queensland pair recorded 3.9 seconds in the Emerald Rodeo on Saturday night to win team roping and become the first pair to go under four seconds in APRA history.
Last year, they won the team roping title at The Warwick Rodeo National Finals, one of four 2015 titles won by Shane.
Shane Kenny is the most successful rider in APRA history with 35 title wins to his credit in all around, rope and tie, steer wrestling and team roping.
He has only won three national finals title buckles in team roping but his combination with Brendan Kenny could net them a fourth in Warwick on October 27-30 this year.
The Emerald Rodeo was held in conjunction with the APRA Junior National Finals which were held over three rounds.
For the second year running, Roma (Qld) rider Teal Ayers won an all around title.
She was first in the all around this year after winning two titles last year.
Montana O’Toole of Gracemere (Qld) won this year’s barrel racing junior title while Riverslea (Vic) cowboy Dylan Richardson was the champion in steer wrestling and Ty Pokarier, of Westwood (Qld) the best in breakaway roping.
Rodeo is one sport where juniors regularly win at open level and that was the case in the past year when Ayers won the barrel race at the Lazy Acres Double Dip in Central Queensland among a lot of placings in open rodeos.
The Emerald Rodeo was the first in the Northern Run in the APRA.
Action in the Northern Run now moves to Taroom on July 30 and then to Cloncurry on August 5-6 and Mt Isa on August 12-14.
A rodeo is also planned as part of the Texas Show in south Queensland on July 23.
