A FATHER and son from Central Queensland are in two of the top three positions in Australian Professional Rodeo Association standings after five months of the new season.
The new season started on May 1 and will go to September 30 next year as the APRA moves its season to match the new time slot for the National Finals, the last weekend in October at the Warwick Rodeo.
Jordan Iker is second in All Around Cowboy APRA standings and his father Shane Iker third.
At this year’s National Finals, Shane Iker won the All Around Cowboy title, his third overall win and second in the past three years.
Jordan is fifth in the rope and tie, sixth in steer wrestling and 11th in team roping header standings. He leads the Junior High Point Cowboy standings.
The All Around leader in the 2016-2017 season is Emerald rider Shane Kenny who had four placings in his events at the Finals without winning an individual title.
The top trio will need to travel south for some rodeos in the next two months if they want to maintain their spots at the top of the standings.
The four APRA rodeos in the next six weeks are in South Australia and New South Wales before the start of the Christmas Run at Myrtleford in Victoria on Boxing Day.
Rodeos are scheduled at Myrtleford, Yarrawonga and Beechworth (Vic), Carrieton (SA), Tumbarumba and Finley (NSW) between Boxing Day and January 7 which are a great opportunity for riders not in the top-three in the all around to move up the standings.
Emerald rider Leanne Caban leads the All Around Cowgirl and breakaway roping standings and will need to travel to at least some of the southern rodeos to fend off a likely challenge from Blandford (NSW) rider Jo Caldwell and reigning APRA All Around Champion Shianne O’Donoghue-Kent (Bunyip, Vic) for the lead.
Caldwell leads the barrel racing standings after competing in the Finals in Warwick and recording a second in round 1.
