Riders from Emerald, Yass and Lockington go for glory at Myrtleford
RIDERS from three states go into the first rodeo on the Christmas Run at Myrtleford as favourites for Steer Wrestling .
The Golden Spurs Rodeo at Myrtleford in north-east Victoria on Boxing Day heralds the start of the Christmas Run each year in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
There are 208 nominations for Myrtleford, including more than 30 in each of the cowgirl events, Barrel Race and Breakaway Roping.
The rodeo starts at 4pm at the Myrtleford Recreation Reserve and John P. Gill from The Rock (NSW) is the rough-stock stock contractor.,
In Steer Wrestling, current APRA champion Clay Bush from Yass (NSW) will be the favourite along with last year’s winner Shane Kenny and Victorian star Lee Kimber.
Bush had two wins and one second in the four National Finals rounds in Steer Wrestling in Warwick in October to win his first pro title. It was the first APRA finals for the 24-year-old farrier.
Kenny, of Emerald (Qld) won three individual titles at the 2015 National Finals and the All Around Cowboy buckle but missed out on a title this year. He currently leads APRA All Around standings.
Lockington (Vic) cowboy Lee Kimber won the final round of the Steer Wrestling at this year’s finals and was third in the aggregate. He is currently 17th in Steer Wrestling standings and needs to move up two places to qualify for next year’s National Finals.
Nominations have opened for the Mt Isa New Year’s Eve Rodeo at Buchanan Park, a new event on the APRA calendar.
One of the favourites in timed events at Mt Isa will be Hughenden cowboy Clancy Middleton in the Rope and Tie, Steer Wrestling and Team Roping. Middleton’s wife Tenielle is in the Barrel Racing and Breakaway Roping.
Emerald (Qld) rider Leanne Caban is an early favourite at Mt Isa as she currently leads the All Around Cowgirl and Breakaway Roping standings in the APRA.
