FORMER World All Around and Bull Ride Rookie Champion Brad Pierce will be one of the riders to watch at Saturday’s Hay Rodeo in New South Wales. (FEB 18)
Pierce won the 2015 Saddle Bronc title in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association and is currently fourth in new season standings.
He was second in Saddle Bronc with a score of 82 at Wagga Wagga early this month, two points behind winner Cooper Thatcher, of Gundagai.
Pierce will face a field including Warwick cowboy Lane Grayson who qualified for the 2016 National Finals after competing during the Australian winter in North America.
Hayden Tyrrell (Boorowa, NSW) will be one of the riders to watch in rough stock events after a win in the Bull Ride at Wagga Wagga with a score of 84 on Horrible Manners. Only two riders made time at Wagga Wagga on the John P Gill bulls.
Tyrrell made it a big paying weekend at Wagga Wagga when he scored 74 to finish second in the Bareback behind winner Ben Hall from Leongatha in Victoria who won with 77.
The bulls from the John P Gill string will again be used for the Hay Rodeo so the cowboys will need to improve if all available placings are going to be filled.
Young cowboy Ben Thorp will challenge Tyrrell in the Bull Ride after he enjoyed an outstanding 2016.
Current APRA cowgirl titleholders Shianne O’Donoghue-Kent and Rebecca Van Houten will both compete at Hay.
O’Donoghue-Kent, of Lockington in Victoria, won the Barrel Race at Wagga Wagga in a time of 16.508 seconds and is favourite in Saturday’s rodeo.
In Breakaway Roping, Tullakool rider Rebecca Van Houten is the current title holder and the favourite to win this weekend in an event which has attracted a field of more than 20 riders.
The Hay Rodeo will be held at the Hay Showgrounds and action will commence from 6:30pm.
