RODEO HEADS TO STREAKY BAY (SA)
Rodeo heads to Streaky Bay (SA) on Saturday, November 23
EDEN Valley (SA) cowgirl Amanda Tielen will be one of the riders to watch in the first rodeo on the Eyre Peninsula in three decades.
Streaky Bay Rodeo chairperson Lyn Finch recalls going to rodeos in the area with her father.
“Rodeo is back after 30 years and the event has been put together by Streaky Bay Tourism and Business Association and the Streaky Bay Racing Club,” she said.
“We are expecting a crowd of 2000 from the peninsula and further afield.
“There will be more than 115 competitors including a bus load from the Northern Territory and riders from New South Wales and Victoria.
“Some riders who competed at Kapunda in South Australia last weekend have extended their stay to include Streaky Bay Rodeo. They will do a lot of fishing and sightseeing this week.”
The list of competitors is like a who’s who of rodeo.
Tielen won the all around cowgirl title at the 2018 Mt Isa Rodeo, the richest in the nation, and will be one of the favourites for the barrel race and breakaway roping.
She will be joined at Streaky Bay by a field, including New South Wales bronc riders Ben Hall and Brad Pierce, and Victorian ropers Terry Evison and Aaron Bookluck.
South Australian rider Tom Willoughby is the only cowboy in the modern era to compete in five events on the circuit.
As well as the eight APRA events, a local barrel race will be held on Saturday.
Finch said she would be talking to the community, sponsors and riders about the possibility of the rodeo becoming an annual event.
“The fans are looking forward to the barrel racing, team roping and who doesn’t like the bull ride,” she said.
Tickets available at the Gates of the rodeo venue, the Streaky Bay Racecourse, open at 2pm Saturday with action at 5pm-10pm before two hours of music to finish the rodeo.
