MORE than 400 nominations have been received for the Taroom Rodeo in Queensland on Saturday. (July 17)
The rodeo is for championship points in the Australian Professional Rodeo Association.
The first rodeo on the Northern Run was at Emerald in late June and action will start at 2pm at the Taroom Showgrounds on Saturday.
Taroom Rodeo Club president Harold Ball said nominations were the best since the late 1990s.
“Garry McPhee from Lurg in Victoria is bringing the open bucking horses to Taroom for 38 riders,” Ball said.
“There are 22 second-division cowboys who will compete on horses from Taroom contractor Rick Knudsen.”
Warwick contractor Frank Biddle will supply the stock for the 45 bull riders heading to Taroom.
Former Taroom and now Surat resident Peter Barber will supply stock for the timed events.
The best nominations are 66 combinations in team roping, 59 in the ladies barrel race and 36 in the junior barrel race.
Taroom was the home of legendary cowboy, the late Jim McGuire, and his daughter Sharon McGuire and grandsons Stuart and James McGuire Spalding will compete in the timed events.
The rodeo will be run by the seven members of the Taroom Rodeo Club with help from volunteers.
The committee which runs the Black Tie Ball for the Royal Flying Doctor Service will be on the gate and assist with the running of the rodeo.
Ball said his committee helped out for the Black Tie Ball each year.
“We usually have a crowd of more than 500 at the Taroom Rodeo and the committee is hoping for 1000 this year with such large nominations,” he said.
“Our rodeo is always a few weeks before Mt Isa. Some of the Southern riders like the fact that Taroom is halfway from the southern states to the Mt Isa rodeo, some riders will stay in Queensland for the rodeos in July and August.”
The Mt Isa Rodeo has the most prizemoney in the APRA and is on August 12-15.
Last week, there was 30mm rain at Taroom but the sand-based rodeo arena will be in perfect condition for the rodeo.
Competitors this season will notice major improvements to the rodeo arena at the Taroom Showgrounds.
“We received a grant for upgrading of $35,000 from the Gaming Machine Community Benefit Fund and with $6000 from our club, we put $41,000 into facilities.
Tickets are not required before the rodeo, patrons can check in using the QR code.
